Dear Transformappers!
Here Wendy sends some new infos about the new plattform for Greenmap.
She asked me to correct my last mail, to clarify, that Greenmap-Icons
are not yet released as opensource but their are still discussing how to
make it. It is a challenge to change the direction of an 20year
experienced organisation, where so many people spend their time for...
*@Techniqians:
What do you think about using cartoDB and improve it? Should they go for
it? Should we do it too? Should Greenmap better wait for our plattform?
*
*Who, apart from Michael and "onYOURway" is actually developing some
softwarecode for a mapping plattform?
*
Thanks
Helmut

hello Mapmakers,
Thanks to Thomas Turnbull, we have a great resource for
technically-minded Green Mapmakers to test, and further develop.
He has been testing the CartoDB mapping platform with data exported from
Open Green Map, as you can see here - http://cdb.io/1E46C6K
<http://www.google.com/url?q=http%3A%2F%2Fcdb.io%2F1E46C6K&sa=D&sntz=1&usg=A…>
at this doc (no password needed) you'll also find his detailed tutorial
<https://docs.google.com/document/d/1SkPJF4eO5C_NmenligqoqDEv_S6DHMUxKOkEeUx…>
for exporting your Open Green Map into CartoDB and customizing how it
looks. It's remarkable how many things you can do with your map once
it's on https://cartodb.com/
Many things have yet to be styled (or built), but CartoDB, which is open
source, gives us the opportunity to build what we need together.
Right now, we welcome the participation of people with technical skills.
I'm not equipped! but I'm ready to help people get together, and make
something wonderful that benefits all of us and the world we share.
You can share how you did it on https://github.com/greenmap (which is,
according to this beginners guide
<http://opensource.com/life/15/2/beginners-guide-github>)is a place
where every developer (or aspiring developer) can share their source
code and stories with the world. In this way we can continually build
an ideal Green Map platform on CartoDB together. Translation can be done
this way too.
You can add comments right to the tutorial
<https://docs.google.com/document/d/1SkPJF4eO5C_NmenligqoqDEv_S6DHMUxKOkEeUx…>
page, and we can also use this for discussion:
http://lab.greenmap.org/groups/cartodb/
It will take time. But together! we can do it.
Please let us know you are contributing on the Tutorial page, GitHub or
at the Lab, and let's enjoy working together this new way - thank you all!
best wishes, Wendy

Hi there,
I wanted to share some insights from my field research about maps for the
transformation. In the menu of my blog post
<https://transitionlab.wordpress.com/2015/04/13/field-report-1-maps-for-csa-…>
:
- Living Lots in NYC: an open source platform to support the
idenfication and use of vacant lots of land for community gardening
- Maps of community supported agriculture in France
- Geographical mash up of databases around social and solidarity economy

N'abnd,
http://doodle.com/trt53c2y6uwtpfhhcsdhg7au/admin#cmt755358061
1000 Dank

Guckt: http://discourse.transformap.co/
http://discourse.transformap.co/c/welcome-on-board/who-is-who
Dann könnt Ihr Euch z.B. aussuchen, wo Ihr mitmachen wollt.
http://discourse.transformap.co/t/our-working-structure/219
1. unsere kurze Selbstbeschreibung, dh. wenn jemand wissen will, was
TransforMap ist -> hier nachgucken
http://discourse.transformap.co/t/transformap-a-short-description/289
Kann natürlich weiter diskutiert werden! Könnt Ihr auch so auf allen
Kanälen verbreiten.
2. alle Infos zum Mapping Month May
http://discourse.transformap.co/c/mapping-month-may-2015

ALERT: @transforMappers: If there are mistakes in the following message,
please correct me! + at the very end, there is some new information re.
the partners for the intl. testmapping
ISSUE: WHERE ARE WE AT WITH TRANFORMAP AND THE TESTMAPPING
Dear all,
first of all: amis québecois, I am so sorry for the delay, I have been
involved in too many processes lately, but as far as TransforMap is
concerned the reason for the delay in informing You, our international
peers and (hopefully) co-mappers, is a really good one:
First of all, we've managed to set up sth. like an initial governance
structure:
http://blog.14mmm.org/transformap-has-a-working-structure-and-its-wild/
That is; we went through an internal process of urgently needed f2f
conversations and decision making and are now able to divide the myriad
of tasks more swiftly.
And secondly: we made a proposal to the European Union within their
CHEST project : http://www.chest-project.eu/
Tatataaaa, we were pre-selected, meaning that now everybody is overly
busy with preparing the documents for the final selection process, this
would help us to finance especially the programming and the coordination
work for the next year and beyond.
Moreover we have been preparing the test-mapping process and tools + the
partnerships to go international, for instance with Shareable in the US.
All of us are very aware of the fact that we urgently need some basic
information in English, and we will work on that as soon as we get two
funding proposals (the one to the EU and another one) off desk.
We are already working on it:
http://discourse.transformap.co/t/self-description-of-transformap/164
Now; where are we at with the taxonomy and with the testmapping?
Taxonomy: We've FINALLY made our decisions about the three most
important category-groups: That is:
- needs ---> ready for translation into French, Finish and many other
languages (see
https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/User:KartenKarsten/futureMap#Needs_fulf…
- mode of interaction ---> ready for translation into French, Finish and
many other languages
https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/User:KartenKarsten/futureMap#Mode_of_In…
- self-description of the community ----> we made the final decisions,
that is: We know know which tribes we wanna start with, but we still
need to finish the short descriptions in English (so, it is not yet
ready for translation)
Here are "the tribes";
https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/User:KartenKarsten/futureMap#Self-descr…
As you can easily see: this is a project of CONVERGENCE; it cannot be
otherwise. So, while we work together on TransforMap we enact TAPAs
(There Are Plenty of Alternatives) and we network in real life (instead
of only talking about the need to network)
It is important to note that for TranforMap (not for OSM of course), the
self-identification with one of these OR OTHER communities will be
mandatory; I can explain this later. But this is the only way to - at
the end - generate a global map, where we can make "all commons"
visible, or "all solidarity economy projects" or simply "all TAPAs"-
more on this later (because this only applies to the TransforMap layer,
not for OSM (as we don't control the handling of categories, tags and
data on OSM.
We are also collecting the so called "Points of Interest", as this is
sth. the common mapper (and user) is very interested in.
TOOLS:
Making the decisions about the taxonomy has been key for programming the
testmapping tools, and again... it took us a while to get everything
done. But now we have two options.
- the first one is to collect data via our TRANSFORTESTIONAIRE:
https://docs.google.com/a/getactive.org/forms/d/16LpwkNrL9YtX2-UknMO1M8k0_w…
All tags are updated to the current state of the taxonomy!
You can use it RIGHT NOW, the only BUT is, that data will be collected
and need to be transferred manually to OSM later, but it helps us to get
the testmapping done and get feedback on the Taxonomy,
- the second is, that our programmers (some magic is in there, I swear
you), are about to finish a prototype for the online testmapping
(needing a few more days) and that the current state of the taxonomy
finally allows to work on the official and user friendly entry mask.
So; If you wanna start testmapping right now: GO FOR IT and use our
transfortestionaire,
If you wanna wait for another tool, bear with us.
TESTMAPPING:
You might not be surprised that giving the huzzle and buzzle in the
whole process we finally decided that we will move the testmapping days
to a testmapping month, that is MAY 2015
According to your advice, dear friends in Canada, we suggest to organize
testmappings at a few spots, that is: wide and exhaustive testmappings
in 5 or 6 cities in different regions/continents instead of a bit of
testmapping everywhere.
THEREFORE WE NEED YOU SUPPORT!
Our ideas for the moment:
please focus on a selected place/ city or rural region)
USA - Partner: Shareable (please focus on a
Canada - Partner: REmix the Commons/ OSM Montreal/ Others -> I guess it
will be Montreal
FRANCE - Partner: ? - there will be certainly a wonderful opportunity at
the Ouishare -Fest
AUSTRIA - Partner: OSM Graz/ ELEVATE/ OTHERS: -> Graz
GERMANY - Partner: Anstiftung/Ertomis and Others mainly TransforMappers
--> Munich and/or Berlin
FINLAND - http://www.commons.fi/ -> selected place in Finland
The list is open!
We now need to start the global conversation about the testmapping and
can use our global mmm list for it (the one I am cceing); at the same
time we are trying to get some funds for the test-mapping process.
PLEASE REGISTER THERE
- if you are interested in the process
- if you need follow-up information
- if you can contribute sth (proposals/ translations/ partnership for
testmapping/ whatever idea and resources)
If I forgot to respond to any of your questions, I will be happy to do
so asap.
Please forgive me that I won't re-read and correct my e-mail, but I
still have to phone conferences waiting for me tonight :-)
Many, many thanks for all the support you've provided so far

Dear TransforMappers - Especially the technicians
Greenmap - where we "coppied" our entry mask from - open their icons for
open source! They also start to work closer together with OpenStreetMap.
And they need a new plattform. At the Moment, they are talking about
cartoDB. See below, to know what they need extra...
Thats probably a good moment to start further collaboration and extend
their set of icons...
You are allways welcome to contact wendy directly: web(a)greenmap.org .
Please put me in cc, so i know who is in touch with them!
Yours Helmut

Betreff: [GreenMap] Important! Icons - mapmaking platform - Your help -
State of the Map - Green Map’s NYC office
Datum: Tue, 24 Feb 2015 13:29:32 -0500
Von: Wendy Brawer <web(a)greenmap.org>

Hello Mapmakers,
Lets continue the Open discussion!
Your responses last month were so helpful (on doc
<https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ecde3YFt9Xbhc_N-IttEJhJ2hX83Qi4pYspSivX…>
and survey
<https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1U4lHr1O_axQu18opx7eZ6BNgBEXVPGqnjcFL9nGg9y…>).
Topics in this email: *1) Icons 2) next mapmaking platform 3) Your help
4) State of the Map 5) Green Maps NYC office*
1. We have written up some questions about the Green Map Icons and put
them in a .doc that you can respond to 3 ways (it seems there is no
single ideal platform for this)
Go to http://Lab.GreenMap.org and on the left, choose the*Icons + Open*
group. From there you can edit or comment if you login.
Or comment on a Google doc without login:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/14G7DQd6ixERhFj_JTeoKPEaBYwaHdqMieb0aQwP…
2. As you may know, we have been seeking a replacement for the aging
Open Green Map platform. We have explored many options for platforms,
and think that CartoDB is one of the best. See it at
http://cartodb.com. Its free to use, its open source, and its pretty
amazing! CartoDB has many features you all have wanted (add local icons,
bulk updates, clustering, data import, base map options, Torque time
mapping, heat mapping, and more). Their website has galleries,
tutorials, and more to help, and this company (not us) will be
responsible for making sure the platform always works. We have met with
their Brooklyn office.
Weve started a CartoDB discussion group at
http://lab.greenmap.org/groups/cartodb/ , where you can offer to help,
read more about it, etc. CartoDB is not the only possible platform (and
it lacks our custom-built OGM features (icon toggling, public photo
submissions, etc), but we think it will give Green Mapmakers what we
need now most rapidly (read about others in development under #1 above).
Please join the discussion, especially if you have technical skills!
-Now, we are seeking help to make an example map with a custom built
editable legend that includes all 170 Green Map Icons, and allows each
Green Mapmaker to select a subset, add local icons, and tweak or
translate definitions. Other Green Mapmakers will be able to clone your
map and put in their own data and improve it more. If you like their
improvements, you can clone it again, too. Thus, Platform development
becomes a shared process.
-
-We need to create a tutorial to help you import your OGM data into a
CartoDB map, and show you how tocustomize, embed and share new
interactive Green Maps.
Were looking into ways to bring the various CartoDB maps together into
one World View Green Map. We already know that our icons wont be shared
generally across the CartoDB platform.
We need your help! Contact me directly or use the comment space at
http://lab.greenmap.org/groups/cartodb/ - thank you!
4. Our goal is to debut the example Green Map on CartoDBs platform in
early June. That is whenState of the Map <http://stateofthemap.us> will
take place in NYC at the United Nations.
State of the Map is OpenStreetMaps major event, and we want to be ready
to share our progress toward Open. Are you thinking about coming to NYC
then? You need to apply forfunding to come
<https://docs.google.com/forms/d/17eEIpUC-ykW62LOP7im_ls-TZ6G4NCkcE9ws70EDLX…>
by March 15^th . We have until March 22^nd topropose a talk or meeting
<http://stateofthemap.us/talk/> wed love to do it together! Its a
great place to get more people involved. Ill start a State of the Map
group here <http://lab.greenmap.org/groups/state-of-the-map/>.
5. Later in June, we have to give up the beautiful office we have had
since 2006 (the school we rent from is expanding). Well relocate
nearby, but in the meantime, lets enjoy using this handsome space. If
you know youll be nearby anytime soon, lets plan to do something
together here a discussion, party, work session, etc.
Lastly, welcome back to the forum we stopped using a couple years ago at
http://Lab.GreenMap.org. Join on the home page (or start using your old
login, as Ben Andersen from Sweden (@Ben72) has already). Every group
has a Forum for threaded comments and a Wiki where you can edit
documents together.
Im happy to answer questions and look forward to working together with you!
Thank you all! Best, Wendy
